Queensland wine wins own trophy after 133 years
For the first time in the Royal Queensland Wine Show's 133 year history a trophy for the best gold medal winning Queensland wine made and produced in Queensland by a Queensland winery has been awarded to Ballandean Estate Wines Gen 3 Shiraz 2007 at the 2010 Royal Queensland Wine & Food Show Awards Dinner, attended the Governor of Queensland Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AO.
The first Gen 3 Shiraz was made in secret as a surprise to honour Angelo and Mary Puglisi, the third generation owners of Ballandean Estate Wines, as they celebrated the winery's 75th anniversary in 2006. Gen 3 is only produced only in exceptional years, the 2007 described by trophy sponsor Peter Scudamore-Smith as an “outstanding example of cooler region Shiraz from its purity of fruit and silky softness”.
With fellow Master of Wine Andrew Corrigan as co-sponsor, the Corrigan Scudamore-Smith Trophy represents a great incentive for local producers, and public recognition of the high quality of wine being produced in this state.
Andrew said of their decision to sponsor the trophy “Peter and I have been involved with wine in Queensland for a long time (Peter since the early 1980's and I since the mid 1980's) and we have seen it grow. We have also been judging at national wine shows for a long time, and it’s good for us to bring one of our ideals into the Royal Queensland Wine Show. “
“The final line up of gold medal winning Queensland wines was only assessed by interstate judges to debunk any criticism of provincial bias . It will also cause them to return home with a good message about Queensland wine.”
Peter commented that “The awarding of this trophy will shine the spotlight on the state's wine industry, something all Queensland exhibitors will benefit from, and give wine drinkers a reason to chase a truly exceptional Queensland wine.”
Two other trophies were awarded within the Queensland wine industry: The department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation Trophy for the Queensland Exhibitor gaining the greatest number of points went to Symphony Hill Wines from the Ballandean highlands of the Granite Belt; and the Queensland Wine Press Club Trophy for the most significant contribution by an individual to the Wine Industry in Queensland was awarded to Dr Bill Ryan.
Bill's vinous love is for Pinot Noir, one of the varieties planted at Summit Estate, a winery he co-owns just north of Stanthorpe. More than an enthusiast, he is a recognised expert, regularly travelling to Burgundy. Bill chaired the Queensland Pinot Club for many years and is a specialist educator at Brisbane's Wine Emporium.
