Artisan Ale

There has been a marked increase of boutique Australian beer producers in the past few years. No longer is the savvy beer drinker content with the standard VB or XXXX, they are turning to these artisan producers for brews with personality. Below are three great examples.

Red Angus Pilsner

A concept from the De Bortoli family whose name would be well known for vino. This is a cracking beer that builds complexity from a selection of 5 malted grains and 3 types of hops. Aromas of stone fruit and spice with a rounded mouth feel and brightness on the palate that is sure to win a few fans.

Stone and Wood Pale Lager

Owning a brewery in Byron Bay would sound like the dream job for most beer guzzlers, but the three boys who own this set up take it very seriously. With a nod to the Bavarian lager style, this Pale Lager is fine yet has a full bodied malt character on the palate. The clean finish makes for it refreshing for as an afternoon knock-off beverage.

Little Creatures Pale Ale 500ml

For my money this is still one of the best examples of Australian boutique brews. Using the finest hops imported from the USA, and bottle conditioned for freshness. Grapefruit aromas and a malty richness that can only come from a long and careful brewing process, the best way to drink this is from a 500ml Pint bottle (worth the search as this brew seems to taste better from the bigger bottle).
