Green Wine
From the smaller more boutique wineries, to the larger established wine brands; environmental ethics have become more than just a marketing tool. In this issue we look at three wines that have mother earth in mind while maintaining sensational quality and regional character. Efforts worthy of applause and all you have to do is buy a bottle.
2008 Yalumba ‘Y’ Vermentino
Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery, but that doesn’t mean they are afraid to try new things. In fact they were the first Australian winery to participate in the Greenhouse Challenge scheme and they been putting significant resources into environment improvement and sustainability since. This Vermentino sourced from the Langhorne Creek region has tropical fruit aromas just jumping out of the glass and incredibly crisp and refreshing.
2008 Zilzie ‘Bulloak’ Chardonnay
With Zilzie’s location right near the Murray river, water conservation has been a priority for some time now. This ‘Bulloak’ range takes it a significant step further and is the wineries first Carbon Neutral product range. This Chardonnay is the stand out of the bunch, with aromas of peach and vanilla and a palate bursting with stone fruit, this is incredibly good chardonnay for the money.
2008 Spring Seed Wine Co. Shiraz
Spring Seed Wine’s come from the Edgehill vineyard in Mclaren Vale and is a certified organic producer. This means that they do not use any pesticides or herbicides and keep preservatives like sulphur to a bare minimum. This Shiraz has blackberry and clove spice on the nose with a juicy palate with ripe plummy fruits and great acidity to finish. This is seriously under priced Shiraz.
