Moscato is an Italian white grape variety that is made into delectably light, slightly fizzy with plenty of grapey fruit sweetness. In Australia it has often just been very sweet, low priced wines that are pretty average but there has been a turn in recent times to Australian producers taking the style seriously. These slightly sweet wines work wonders with desserts, but are also refreshing on a summer’s day.
2009 Schild Estate ‘Three Springs’ Moscato Barossa Valley, SA $
This example is named after the Three Springs Farm, the original homestead property before the Schild family started making wine. It is made from late picked Riesling and has bouquet filled with candied pineapple and musk. The palate is slightly sweet, but there is a backbone of Riesling acidity keeping everything fresh.
2009 Stella Bella Pink Moscato Margaret River, WA $
From the beautiful Margaret River region and made from the authentic Moscato grape variety, there is a slightly pink hue in the glass. A bouquet filled with aromas of Turkish delight and musk lollies, the palate follows with lychees and summer berries and balanced sweetness. An absolute delight!
2009 Grant Burge Moscato Barossa Valley, SA
Grant Burge has significant plantings of Frontignac and is well known for a sweet white called Lilly Farm. This is basically Lilly Farm with fizz. Lots of lychee fruits on the nose and a palate of sweet spice and candied orange. This is light and bright and is delightfully sweet with a limey zing to finish. The perfect lunch time drink.
