With a distinct drop in temperature over the last few weeks, it is time to take advantage of that very brief opportunity in Queensland to enjoy a glass of warming red wine. Below are a couple of rich South Australian offerings to warm the cockles of the coldest of hearts.
2007 Longview ‘The Devils Elbow’ Cabernet Sauvignon Adelaide Hills, SA
The Longview vineyard is one of the most picturesque winery sites in the Hills and is worth a visit by anyone visiting the region. They are unique in there ability to produce really varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, a rarity in this region. There are lots of dark berries and beautifully integrated charred oak and chocolate on the palate. Devilishly
2008 d’Arenberg ‘The Footbolt’ Shiraz McLaren Vale, SA
This well known red is named after Footbolt the racehorse, the sale of which allowed the Osborn family to start d’Arenberg several generations ago. The palate is juicy with plums and blackcurrant but shows significant restraint considering 2008 was a fairly warm vintage. Take a punt on Footbolt, it is sure to be a winner.
2008 Shaw and Smith Shiraz Adelaide Hills, SA
Shaw and Smith are an iconic producer in the Adelaide Hills and are renowned for their premium whites. This Shiraz is joining the pack with a bouquet of vibrant berry and a palate packed with pepper and spice. There is some seriously good oak in play here too, adding just a hint of vanilla. This will age well if you can resist temptation.
