Greg Plowes' (Tetsuya's sommelier) Favourite Places in Sydney

Originally from Brisbane, Greg Plowes has worked in many of the better Brisbane restaurants and has travelled to various wine regions around the world prior to Tetsuya's where he has shared his passion for approximately 10 years. He has incredible customer service skills and vast knowledge of Australian and International wines.

Tetsuya's cuisine is unique, based on the Japanese philosophy of natural seasonal flavours, enhanced by classic French technique and the freshest possible ingredients. A complete encounter, Tetsuya's offers one of Sydney's most remarkable wine lists.

Tetsuya's
529 Kent Street, Sydney

Favourite Place for Breakfast:
Forbes and Burton
(Surry Hills)
Great way to start your day, with brekkies that are made with care, imagination and sometimes a little tradition. Good coffee. Try for a table in the sun on those cool winter mornings.

Fratelli Paradiso (Potts Point)
If you are after one of the best breakfasts in Sydney, you'll need your Gucci sunglasses, to check out the passing glamour types and the occasional movie star.  The servings can be small but that's fine for us petit types that don't need a big breakfast. If they are too busy, buy a coffee and an almond croissant from the bakery section, and window shop along Macleay Street.

Favourite Place for After Breakfast:
Bourke Street Bakery
(Surry Hills)
The best sausage rolls in the world! The pork and fennel is my favourite and my vego partner is also catered for.  Finish with a lime and ginger creme brulee tart.  Excellent coffee too, there is always a line out the door, but it moves quickly.

The Wall (Surry Hills)
Unassuming surrounds with good basic food and excellent coffee. Try stopping at one latte, I challenge you.  A great pit stop.

Malibu Sandwiches (Surry Hills)
Easily the best sandwiches in Sydney, and surely the biggest! Take your appetite with you, and take your sandwich to a nearby park as space is limited. The chicken schnitzel with celeriac slaw is a must.
SHOP 1, 62-64 FOSTER ST, SURRY HILLS, MON-FRI 8AM-2.30PM

Noodles and Dumplings:
Iichiban Boshi (City)
This ramen house is frequented by asian students reading manga comics. The house specialty is Tonkotsu Ramen, hand made noodles in a puddle of collagen rich sesame pork broth. Be sure to get a serve of gyoza and check out Kinokunyia book store next door.

Din Tai Fung (Chinatown)
This is a Taiwanese chain of dumpling house.  All the dumplings are handmade in a glass walled kitchen with an army of masked chefs looking like a scene out of a Stanley Kubrick movie. The dumplings are what you go there for, my faves are the pork and prawn in spicy sauce or the pork and crab roe steamed dumplings. The staff are very friendly and helpful, which makes for a pleasant change in Chinatown.

Big Night Out:
Longrain (Surry Hills)
Still the best Thai in Sydney. Share if you can, if you can't the great staff can offer some dishes in half size portions. There can be a wait at dinner so be careful not to get too carried away with tasty cocktails. You can book at lunch. Check out the daily specials!

Buzo (Woollahra)
This is what they mean by "Hospitality". Cosy and comfy room, cosy food and professional staff that are not jaded bitter and twisted.

Marque (Surry Hills)
One of the best fine dining experiences in Australia.   Have the deg menu for the full experience and rely on the sommeliers expertise to match the wines with thought and imagination.

Bently Bar (Surry Hills)
Newly renovated Bently Bar is now in Drop Dead Gorgeous surrounds to match the drop dead gorgeous food. Brent pushes the boundaries without ever losing focus on the food or the guests enjoyment. On the plate is imagination, technique and a confidence. A snack at the bar or a full deg menu with one of the best vegetarian menus in the country (you won't get served a mushroom risotto here!). Nick's wine list is breathtaking in it's scope, so don't hesitate to ask for guidance.

Bars:
Opera Bar
(Circular Quay)
A must for any visitor to Sydney. Under the Opera House with views to die for. Sunday afternoon there is always live jazz.

Glass Brasserie Bar (City)
Try the bar at the Glass Brasserie in the Hilton Hotel for a civilized grown-up drink. You can drool over Kim Bickley's amazing wine list or just leave it up to the barman to make you a Tanqueray Ten martini. A wall of glass behind shows off the beautiful Queen Victoria Building.

Shady Pines Saloon (Darlinghurst)
If you no longer want to act like a grown up, mosey on down to Shady Pines where you may find yourself standing at the bar next to a scantily clad red indian.  Open from 4pm daily. The quirky bar is somewhere between a western saloon, taxidermy store and back alley juke joint. There are no signs, and it is stuck in a back alley behind Oxford street.  Trust the barmen, they really know their stuff.
Shop 5, 256 Crown St Darlinghurst, 2010

Aperitif (Kings Cross)
Tucked away, this wine bar is a welcome respite from seedy Kings Cross.  One of the very few open 'til very late for a meal and glass of something gorgeous.  Charles the co-owner is an ever gracious front of house host.

Shopping:
Belle Fleur Chocolates
(Petersham + Rozelle)
Two great locations to stock up on the best chocolates in Sydney. If you are desperate, the David Jones Food Hall sells BF as well but I recommend you make the pilgrimage to one of their stores.  Some of my many faves include the Teardrop, Five Spice, Salted Caramel, Sesame and Speculaas.

Victor Churchill Butcher (Woollahra)
One of Sydney's finest meat providores has opened their now famous butchery in Woollahra. With a fit out into the millions, this is like no other butchery you will ever see. Leave your vegetarian partner at the hotel!
